Before you commit to a purchase or long-term lease or financing agreement on a new car, check out the vehicle you are considering at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (USA).
Certainly, vehicle safety is a major factor in determining the cost of automobile insurance. Falling "in love" with the car of your dreams then signing on the dotted line while at the dealership can be a costly nightmare if you then discover you can afford the car, but not the insurance!
Much of this is just logic and common sense. What type of driver is attracted to a modestly priced, sedate, 4 door sedan? What would the likely claims experience be for this type of car compared to a sports car or subcompact?

Naturally there may be other offsetting factors to consider such as reliability, repair costs and warranties, but all factors should be considered before you commit to what is a major long-term financial obligation.
